1. Have To For Objective Obligation

Have to expresses impersonal obligation. The subject of have to is obliged or forced to act by general law or rute (for example, the law or school rules).

• I have to start working at 7.00 a.m. or my boss will fire me

• John has to wear a tie at work


2. Don't Have To = Not required, but possible

The negative form of Have To expresses the idea that something is not required.

• You don't have to arrive before 8

• We don't have to work overtime on Saturdays


3. Must For Subjective Obligation

Must expresses personal obligation. Must expresses what the speaker thinks is necessary. Must I subjective.

• You must stop smoking for your healthy

• If you want to pass the exam, you must study hard


4. Mustn't = Prohibition

The negative form of Must expresses the idea that something is prohibited.

• You must not bring food to the class

• You mustn't drive more than 25 MPH in this zone


5. Need To = Important For Someone

Need to expresses that something is important for you to do.

• You need to get up early tomorrow

• I need to spend more time with my children because I've been so busy lately


6. Don't Need To = Not necessary, but possible

The negative form of 'Need To' to express that something isn't necessary, but possible.

• You don't need to come to the meeting next week
